If you're planning to visit St. John's for the first time, WELCOME!!!!! We are thrilled to welcome you.  This page offers some advice on what to expect at St. John's so that you may feel comfortable and at home on your first visit.

Where are we located?

St. John the Evangelist is located in the heart of Flossmoor, at the corner of Leavitt Avenue and Park Drive (across the street from Leavitt Park).

Parking

At St. John's we do not have a parking lot, however there is ample street parking.  If you have mobility challenges there is street parking on Leavitt Avenue (on the church side of the street) reserved for you.

A.D.A  Entrance

We know that St. John's is in an old building and can be challenging for those requiring A.D.A. assistance.  We are working on addressing these issues.  Currently we have a lift that will give you access to the Church and the Undercroft fellowship space.  Please enter the Church through the door located behind the Columbarium (Outdoor Altar) on the Leavitt Avenue side of the Church.  The lift is located in the hallway to your right as you enter the building.  If you need assistance, please ask an usher.

A Few Do's and Dont's

DO:

  • Do come as you are.  We tend toward the casual here, but you will find some in their Sunday best and others in shorts and sneakers (at least in the summer).

  • Do sit where ever you feel comfortable.  While Episcopalians have a tendency to sit in the same seats every week, we will be happy to have you sit with us - we'll even help you out if you seem a little lost in the liturgy!

  • Do feel free to come forward and receive communion.  This is God's table and all are welcome here.  Communion at St. John's is not restricted to only members of our Church or even to Episcopalians.  All who desire to know God more closely are welcome at this table.

  • Do please plan to join us after the service for Coffee Hour in the Undercroft.  This is a great opportunity to meet folks and chat with our leadership and clergy.

  • Do feel free to sign our "Guest Register" located at the back of the church in front of the Lady Chapel.  This is one way to help you get to know us and to help us get to know you a little better.

DON'T:

  • Don't worry if you aren't sure what to do.  Our liturgy is beautiful, but it can also be confusing, or even intimidating.  That's ok.  We were all new here once.  We are working on ways to better help visitors navigate the liturgy, but in general, the service bulletin will guide you through what's going on.  If you see a reference to the Book of Common Prayer (sometimes referred to as the Prayer Book, or even the B.C.P.) we are talking about the RED Book of Common Prayer found in the pewbacks in front of you. If we reference a Hymn Number, we are referring to the BLUE Hymnal 1982 also found in the pewback in front of you. Anything else should be printed in your bulletin. If you aren't sure what to do, just follow along as best as you can. We worship by participating, watching, and listening. We are more concerned with you meeting God than we are with how you are doing it.

  • Don't worry if you have small children who make noise.  We welcome all God's children in worship, NO EXCEPTIONS.  We understand that all the wiggles, giggles, loud "whispering", and even crying is merely age appropriate ways of expression and thus a form of worship itself.  At St. John's we do not believe that children are the future of the Church, we believe they ARE the Church.  If you find the pews are too confining for your children, we have a Children's Chapel located near the front of the church in the West Transept.  This is a welcoming space for children to play on the floor during Church and there are plenty of pews for  parents next to this area.
